Intermarriage between Highest mental types in human population is often beneficial to produce natural leaders of the right constructive type. Rate the genetic selection of the U.E. [United Empire] Loyalist stock in Canada e.g. Merediths, Tories, Bennetts, Oslers. Meredith [Vincent] – President of Bank of Montreal; Dr. Torie [Henry Marshall]– Research Council, Mathematics at McGill; Oslers – Finance; […]

Intermarriage between Morons

Mental Defectives [word not clear here] is very detrimental to the race – Jukes and Kallikaks.

Birth Control

Is of primary importance in spacing of children. It also controls and is a benefit to race improvement. Margaret Sangster was the pioneer in establishing clinics in Holland. Her pioneer work together with Dr. Marie Stokes of London has spread widely. Kaufman of Kitchener has initiated Birth Control clinics in Canada. Toronto League for Race Betterment – Miss Brandt [Gladys]

Sterilization of the Unfit

Sterilization in that [to] delete inferior germ plasm from the race is justified. The border costs where genius and the imbecile are very close and hard to diagnose. This has been found in recent German work. Sterilization laws Penn. 1907, Cal. 1909, Alta. 1928. We are fortunate in having, on the whole, good human stock in Canada compare with the racial problems in southern U.S.A. and in South Africa with the colour problem. More attention must be given to human race improvement. Since the depression in 1929 very little attention has been paid to the problems of over population. Most of our thought has been directed toward political economic systems. Note the problems of population pressure in the highly industrialized European countries which is pushing us into war. Look at the end results of over population in China and India. We must face this biological approach to human improvement the nation which improves its human stock will win.

Educational Opportunities and Genetics

The best minds segregated out in the population should be given an opportunity through scholarships to train for key positions in the fabric of our national life. […]

Examples of the spread of “bad germ plasm in community and nation”
  • Jukes – a Dutch family – Max Juke

Two sons married into a family of six sisters, five of whom were disreputable. Lugdate [?] investigatd family in 1975. He found:

    • 50 prostitutes
    • 60 thieves
    • 160 paupers
    • 7 murderers
    • Cost to state $1,300,000

In 1915 Dr. Easterbrook investigated. It had increased to 1258 living members:

    • 378 prostitutes
    • 86 keepers of brothels
    • 118 criminals
    • 107 mentally deficient children
    • 698 backward in school
    • Estimates 40% of Jukes were mental defectives. A glaring example of spread of genes for inferior qualities and poor environmental condition.

  • Kallikak

Martin Kallikak- Revolutionary Soldier (Soldier of the Revolution) met a feeble-minded girl in a tavern. An illegitimate son was born and named Martin Kallikak Jr. Married – raised a family of 10. Of the 480 descendants of this branch records were secured of 189

    • 143 mentally deficient
    • 43 normal
    • 36 illegitimate children
    • 33 sexually immoral
    • 24 confirmed alcoholics
    • 3 epileptics
    • 82 died in infancy (possibly venereal)
    • 3 criminals
    • 8 kept houses of ill fame
    • 1146 individuals resulting from marriages of Kallikaks with other families usually of low grade mentality of these
    • 262 feeble minded
    • 197 normal

After the episode with the feeble minded girl – Martin married a Quaker woman of good ancestry – 7 children. All married into good families. Their descendants included lawyers doctors, judges, educators. There were no feeble minded or illegitimate children and little alcoholism or immorality. An example of choosing a mate with a good gene inheritance and good environment. […]]
