Context
Respecting Rights is a project of ARCH Disability Law Centre and is led by people with disabilities. It is focused on rights for people labelled with intellectual disabilities.
Self-advocates, lawyers, and advocacy staff work together on rights issues in Ontario.
Respecting Rights holds workshops for people labelled with intellectual disabilities, developmental services staff, and families by volunteer Respecting Rights self-advocates, rights advocacy staff, and a lawyer from ARCH Disability Law Centre. Workshops cover decision-making and legal rights for people labelled with intellectual disabilities. Some workshops involve role play, interactive activities, and a discussion circle. In addition to workshops, Respecting Rights provides resources for persons labelled with intellectual disability (and their support networks) to be actively engaged in making life’s decisions. Respecting Rights is proud to work in partnership with People First of Ontario.
The two videos included in this activity were created by members of Respecting Rights. They show that people with disabilities have the right to participate equally. They also show how the activist voices of those with lived experiences play an important and effective role in changing our society. Their actions transform societal practices and ideas that dehumanize people into positive alternatives that celebrate differences as entangled, generative, and primary to all life and knowledge.1(footnote)
The first video educates people about the project called Respecting Rights. The second video educates people about respecting rights in the health care encounter.
