I’ve always felt like New York is my home away from home. There’s something about the feeling I get the moment I arrive. A few weeks ago, I spoiled my friend Kim and I to a weekend away and booked ourselves 2 nights at the Fairmont Plaza Hotel. Why there? Well, why not? I’ve been to New York I can’t tell you how many times. Definitely lost count on both hands at this point. I have friends who live there and so that was part of the reason to visit. Not only that but of course the shopping and amazing selection of restaurants. But this trip was going to be different. I started 2018 with the mindset of checking items off my ‘Bucket List’. I felt like time was going by so quickly and I wasn’t doing enough things for ME. So, first I booked our flight and then it came down to picking a hotel. At first I did the usual “what kind of deals are online”. But then as I got thinking, I thought “what hotel would I never have dreamed of staying at?” and right away, The Plaza came to mind. Of course, I was going to have a little fun with this and wasn’t telling Kim any details of our trip until we arrived. I told her our hotel was booked but it was going to be a secret. Right away I could sense the excitement from her. We could choose restaurants and things to do and then we’ll base our plans around the location of the hotel.
It wasn’t until we arrived at the airport and it dawned on me, “how much longer will I be able to keep this a secret?”. Customs were going to ask where we’re staying. When we approached the check-in counter for our flight, of course the clerk asks us where we’re staying. I looked at Kim and smiled. Looked back at the woman and nonchalantly said “The Plaza”. She smiled and I looked back at Kim who had this look of OMG!!! We started laughing and immediately I knew this was going to be a fun trip.
There was a slight delay at the airport because of high wind conditions over at LaGuardia. But eventually our flight was called and we were able to board. Now, when I booked our flights, I paid for Economy seats. However, as we boarded the plane and saw our seat numbers, Kim and I looked at each other and thought something was wrong. They had upgraded our seats! Kim thought this was part of my schemeing but I assured her this was not my doing. The whole flight, she and I couldn’t stop smiling. We were dreaming of The Plaza hotel.
As we arrived in New York, we got into our taxi and made our way to the hotel. Arriving at a hotel is never really a big deal, but this day it was. From the moment we arrived, we were literally treated like royalty. Also, I’ll just mention that this was the best smelling hotel ever. They’ve infused the building with the scent of gardenia and oh my was it amazing. We arrived a little earlier to our check-in time so our room wasn’t quite ready. We sat in the cocktail lounge and waited for our call. While waiting, we decided to order a drink and start the trip off with a little cheers to each other. Just as we were getting comfortable, I received a text on my phone from the hotel concierge saying our room was ready. At this point our excitement was beyond control. We were trying to keep our composure as we took the elevator up to our room. I swiped our door key, looked at Kim and said ‘here we go!”. At first glance I saw a sitting area straight ahead and to my right a bathroom. I thought ok, the bathroom is a little smaller than I envisioned, but it wasn’t until I walked fully into the room and that’s when I realized, silly Andrea that’s not the main bathroom, that was only the powder room! Kim and I again couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. It was like we died and had gone to hotel heaven.
The next morning, we woke up and headed to Greenwich village. We decided to go for brunch at Jack’s Wife Freda. A restaurant that has been getting amazing reviews and of course instagrammable photo opportunities. After brunch we headed into SOHO and toured around. Our first stop was Birchbox. A beauty store that literally has every girls most coveted items. Also, if you live in the US you can order monthly boxes loaded with goodies. I’m crossing my fingers that one day this will be available in Canada. We continued to another shop, Glossier. I had heard very little about this company but it has lately been getting more popularity. Kim told me about it and I was interested right away. The shop was located on the penthouse floor of an old warehouse building and as soon as we walked in you could sense the craziness. It was loaded with woman scurrying around trying to pick and choose their desired products.
Later that evening we made plans to go for dinner at Narcissa and joining us would be a friend of ours. Drinks turned to dinner, then somehow we got the craving for ice cream. We originally wanted to head over to Big Gay Ice Cream (yes it’s an actual shop) but it was closing for the night. So, we continued to Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and then to top it off more drinks at a local bar. It was definitely a fun evening!
Sunday morning we woke up and had already decided we’d order room service, relax for a bit and enjoy the comfort of our hotel. I had an idea from seeing a similar photo, that Kim and I would take some memorable pictures with the use of my new camera. We decided to do a photo of each of us sitting in our bed and reading a magazine. As you can see from the picture below, the outcome of that:
The rest of the day was a ‘do as we please’ day. We walked around the neighbourhood and made our way to a little cafe in Bloomingdale’s. Afterwards, I wanted to walk through Central Park and Kim wanted to do a little sightseeing down 5th Avenue. We agreed to meet back at the hotel and then get ready to head to the airport.
As we we’re driving to the airport, all the memories from the weekend were still whirling through my head. Like I said, I’ve been to New York many times, but this time was different. I had was able to check off another item from my bucket list and did with the company of my best friend Kim.
Of course, now that I’m back at home, I already can’t wait to go back again. I’m thinking towards the summer months when the weather is warmer and the days are longer. My question to you, where in New York are your favourite restaurants and shops? I like trying new places each time, though I can also be a creature of habit and revisit the same place twice. Sometimes it’s just too good to pass up.
